NOTE: Milongas come and go, but these are all places that seem fairly stable, and that I've experienced first-hand. Still, it is possible that any of them might change their schedules without notice, so it's always advisable to check their individual websites to verify when you can. Also, please tell me (link at the bottom of the page) if any information on this site becomes outdated and I will try to fix it as soon as I can. Thanks!

Milonga Reviews
(in alphabetical order)

Academie - A popular, very-traditional milonga, with old Buenos Aires bar atmosphere (complete with a regular crowd of old men).

Air de Tango - Nice space on St-Laurent, complete with old piano and fans to cool off with. Traditional music. Can get crowded on a Friday.

Al Sur - Clean and cute dance space. Only (but also quite acceptable!) choice for a Monday night. Music can be hit or miss, and the crowd is a bit older.

Café de Lima - Club-like atmosphere, small dancefloor can be packed, vibe varies.

Chez Lily - Cute venue hidden in an apartment building - good mirrors. Lily was one of Montreal's original milongueras.

Grand Bal Tango - Once a month huge Tango Ball. May include an alternative music room when you want a break from the crowds.

Karma Tango Club - A traditionalist milonga, for those not interested in Tango Fabrika's modern approach.

Mon Tango - Small start-up school in NDG. Their Sunday café-croissant tango is friendly. But bring your partner if you are advanced. Studio Tango - Large dance floor, generally well-attended. Wednesday is their established dance night, and Sunday afternoon practice is nice and friendly.

Tango Fabrika - Mix of modern, alternative, and traditional music; younger crowd, pleasant atmosphere. Thier Tuesday and Friday Neo-Milongas offer the best modern tango nights around.

Tango Libre - Very modern and spacious dance floor, low-lit in red. Never crowded, in fact it usually feels almost empty. Feel free to do all the patadas, volcadas, and creative ganchos that you like, but bring your own partner.

Other Montreal Tango Notes

- Montreal, Quebec, in Canada, is known to be one of the best places to dance the tango in North America, largely because of its passionate people and friendly & inviting atmospheres.
- Most milongas take place in or near the Plateau, Montreal's most characteristically artistic and cultural neighborhood.
- Milongas generally cost around $8-10, practices around $5-8, or about $10-15 for special events.
- Water and other drinks at these places is somewhat expensive ($3), though I guess that is to be expected.
- Make sure to check specific websites for possible cancellations, especially around holidays.
- The best places for beginners are Studio Tango (Sunday practice) and Tango Fabrika.
- For showing off your skills, go to Cafe de Lima (Thursday), Academie (Sunday), or Studio Tango (Wednesday).
- For a crowded atmosphere, try Studio Tango, Cafe de Lima, or Academie.
- To have plenty of space to dance, try Tango Fabrika or Tango Libre.
