Milonga Reviews
Quick Reviews of All Tango Venues: (in alphabetical order)

Academie - A popular traditional milonga, with old Buenos Aires bar atmosphere (complete with a regular crowd of old men), the DJ announces which orchestras he is playing.

Air de Tango - Nice space on St-Laurent, complete with old piano and fans to cool off with.

Al Sur - Clean and cute dance space. Only (but also quite agreeable) choice for a Monday night.

Café de Lima - Salsa-club atmosphere, small dancefloor but with good music. Increasingly popular among the young crowd.

Chez Lily - Cute venue hidden in an apartment building - good mirrors, sometimes they offer tango performances. Lily was one of Montreal's original milongueras.

Moka Danse (Moka Jo) - Good and crowded mixture of locals and visitors, intimate atmosphere, usually a lot of high-level dancers. This was the place to be on a Friday night, but is going to close its doors in September 2008.

Royal Tango - Bright and elegant space, fairly popular. Usually a bit older crowd.

Studio Tango - Large dance floor, well-attended. Wednesday is their well-established dance night. Sunday afternoon practice also usually has a super-friendly crowd.

Tango Fabrika - Modern, alternative, and traditional music; popular with high-level dancers, younger crowd, pleasant atmosphere. Tuesday Neo-Milonga is the best modern tango night in town.

Tango Libre - Very modern and spacious dance floor, low-lit in red. Never crowded, in fact it usually feels almost empty. Feel free to do all the patadas, volcadas, and creative ganchos that you like, but bring your own partner.

Other Montreal Tango Notes

- Montreal, Quebec, in Canada, is known to be one of the best places to dance the tango in North America, largely because of its passionate people and friendly & inviting atmospheres.
- Most milongas take place in or near the Plateau, Montreal's most characteristically artistic and cultural neighborhood.
- Milongas generally cost around $8, practices around $5, or about $12-15 for special events.
- Water and other drinks at these places is somewhat expensive ($3), though I guess that is to be expected.
- Make sure to check specific websites for possible cancellations, especially around holidays.
- The best places for beginners are Studio Tango (Sunday practice) and Tango Libre.
- For showing off your skills, go to Tango Fabrika (Tuesday), Academie (Sunday), or Studio Tango (Wednesday).
- For a crowded atmosphere, try Studio Tango or Academie.
- To have plenty of space to dance, try Tango Fabrika (Friday Practi-Milonga) or Tango Libre.
